UCA_GroupA2_Day 63_Rio San Pedro sediment + 1,5 g FeSO4 + paper_(column exposed to sunlight)

It has been sixty three days  since we prepared our column.

Unfortunately, we can not appreciate many changes since the last day we checked it.
At the top of the column we can see that the number of algae has decreased, one of the reasons could be that the column was not totally exposed to the sunlight, so, if there is not sunlight, there is no photosynthesis and due to this, the algae can not grow.

In the middle, green regions have become bigger than the last day so this indicate us that the cyanobacterias have grown more. When there is not oxygen, the  SO42-  can be used as a last electron acceptor. The red regions have also increased the size.

At the bottom, we can see that there are not any changes, the black color is the same.

  1. Changes from now on will be slower... but the column will be alive for many many more months... years... The oldest Winogradsky column I have ever seen was set up in 1967 and it is still changing colours!

  2. Careful! The green areas are not green sulfur bacteria. Just algae and cyanobacteria.

    2. Thumbs up!
Green sulfur bacteria need a lot of H2S and grow where the column is pitch black. In all of your columns have not seen any but I will post some pictures from a column we have prepared in my lab.
