Welcome to the Winogradsky column lab page! Students from the Departments of Biological Applications and Technology, University of Ioannina and Icthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Greece and the Microbiology course, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cádiz, Spain, discuss their findings on Winogradsky columns they constructed!

Bienvenidos a la pagina web de los Winobloggers! Aquí los estudiantes y profesores de dos departamentos griegos, el Departamento de Aplicaciones y Tecnologías Biológicas de la Universidad de Ioannina y el Departmento de Agricultura, Ictiología y Sistemas Acuáticos de la Universidad de Thessalia, junto con los estudiantes de Microbiología de la Facultad de Ciencias en la Universidad de Cádiz, se reúnen para observar, comentar, preguntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con nuestro experimento, la columna Winogradsky.

Volos_Group 31_Day 9_Light

University of Thessaly, Group number:31  , Day number: 9  Incubation: Light

Our names are Panagiotis Papastathopoulos and Vlachakis Sotirios and we are undergraduate students Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.
This experiment conducted in order to observe the presence of microorganisms in our Winogradsky columns.The ingredients we used in each column were: 1 whole egg(source of CaCOand S), pieces of paper(source of C). These ingredients were mixed with sand that was taken from Anauros beach in Volos(21th March 2016).We filled the bottle with 2/3 sand and  the rest with water from the sea. The bottle was put in conditions with light intensity and temperatures of 15-20°C. 
Today ,9 days after the column was made some change.The mud seems to took darker colour, the water took yellow-beige and we can observe a white line between the sand and water.

  1. Descriptions are ok, but any educated guess on what has happened in the column during the first 9 days?
