Cadiz, 1C: Starting the experiment

Place where sediment was collected and starting date.

Rio San Pedro
05/03/2015

What enrichment materials were added to the preparation Winogradsky Column?

CaCO3 and Paper

How the mixture is prepared? We mix all the mud enrichment material or a part thereof, and then adding the remainder?

Mud with water, calcium carbonate and mixed paper. Once a homogeneous, was poured into the bottle.

What volume of the bottle occupies the sediment?

3/4 parts

What kind of water is added? ¿Of the same site as the sediment or not?

Tap water was added from different sources that sediment

Where is located the column?

It is located in a room with light direactamente will not affect the temperature varies depending on the time of day, and as it is an old house, there is some moisture in the atmosphere.

Ask a scientific hypothesis about their experiment

Throughout the various organisms develop column.
Organisms in the lower part of fermentative processes that produce alcohol and fatty acids as by-products of their metabolism develop.

These products are the substrates for the growth of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Sulfides resulting oxygenated diffusing upper creating a gradient in which photosynthetic bacteria using sulfur released develop.

Above this zone bacteria that do not use sulfur can develop.
Another type of bacteria grow on top and release oxygen that keeps aerobic this area.
