Hello,winobloggers:
It's been
five weeks since this experiment began.
Since our
last publication, it has produced following changes:
The part of
the column that receives sunlight has reddish, greenish and black stains have
decreased. The green color of the upper zone indicates the presence of
cyanobacteria. The red color comes from purple non-sulfur bacteria. The black
spots are due to the reaction of H2S released by bacteria with soil iron.
We can also
see gas bubbles on the surface of the column. This may be because cyanobacteria
have begun to do photosynthesis, using organic material as carbon source and expelling
oxygen as a waste product.
In the part
of the column that no receives sunlight have begun to disappear black regions
due to cessation of the reactions of sulfur with soil iron.
Now, you
can see some pictures of our column.
