UCA_1A-9A_2:Day 28 Light saves us.

Rio San Pedro sediment + 1'48g CaSO4+ filter paper

Day 28:
It has been a month since we made our columns and we have seen noticeable changes.
The light column has patches of different colors all over the column. The bottom is completely black due to FeS, purple patches appear as well. These patches are purple
anaerobic photosynthetic bacteria.Up the bottle we are able to see a raise of red patches ( due to presence of Fe2+). Green patches appear as well, these are cyanobacteria , they provoke the appearance of bubbles (oxygen produced by photosynthesis) .
The dark column has less changes. There are no purple nor green patches. The red patches have disappeared and the column has become darker.

  1. Do you have any better picture to show the purple sulfur bacteria? Lucky you that you got them so soon.

What exactly produces the orange/red colour in the column? Bacteria? Minerals?

Let's see if you get more exotic photosynthetic bacteria growing.
