Volos_Group 18_Day 1-12_Dark

Greetings from Volos!!!

Our names are Natoudi Stamatia and Bousdra Theodora, we are undergraduate students from School of Agricultural Sciences and more specifically, from the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece.
We participate in an experimental trial about Winogradsky columns and with this post we will present our first results from Winogradsky column experiment.

A little information about...
...Our experimental trial day and process

The precise area of our Winogradsky column experiment was at Anauros beach in Volos, on 21th of March 2016.

The ingredients that we used, were:
  • 1 plastic bottle (capacity: 1,5lt)
  • pieces of newspaper
  • mud from the beach
  • 1 egg
  • sea water
The process included the following steps:
  1. The miximg of the mud, the egg and the pieces of the newspaper in a small bucket.
  2. The filling of the 2/3 of the bottle with the mix of the mud, the egg and the newspaper.
  3. The filling of the rest 1/3 of the bottle with sea water.

RESULTS until now...

FIRST DAY - 21/03/2016

This is a quick look of our bottle and its content before we add the sea water. The mud has a brown color and still, we can distinguish the ingredients, exept the egg that has used for the experimental trial.

Right after the adding of the sea water, we can observe from the surface of the bottle that the water is clean and has a yellow color.

SEVENTH DAY - 27/03/2016

The sediment is browner. The water's turbidity has increased. Furthermore, we observed that the water level has also increased and got a light white color. Another phenomenon is the bubbling at the surface of the bottle.

TENTH DAY- 30/03/2016

After observation, we see that the sediment at the botton is black and at the surface, a thick layer has been created. Its color is white and the turbidity there is more increased, compared with the rest of the water. The water level is higher than it was three days before. The bubbling is more evident now.

TODAY ( TWELFTH DAY ) - 1/04/2016

No change was observed since the tenth day of the experimental trial.

That's all for now!!!
A new post will come up soon, when other changes happen!!!
