UCA_3B E _4: 6 weeks later..

The last time we saw the bottle, was two weeks ago. There have not been many changes. The appearance remains the same, only the liquid part is clean. We suppose the bacteries are died because we close the bottle cap, and they din't have enough air to breathing...

In the center, you can see a hole caused by an air bubble to open the bottle. and then came out very bad smell .
Now we keep the bottle, but not completely closed.

  1. Bacteria are tough critters. You smell what you smell because there are bacteria producing it (producing hydrogen sulfide, the rotten egg smell). So your bacteria are not dead! By closing the bottle what you did is to prevent the oxygen entering the bottle, the bottle became completely anaerobic, sulfate reduction was active all the way tot he sediment surface, hydrogen sulfide did not get oxidised by oxygen and it escaped to the water column and your nose... Now you know. Next time do not close the bottle cap completely.
