Univ. of Thessaly, Group number: 21 (Papakonstantinou Angeliki & Paschou Maria), Day number: 44, Incubation: Light

Returning with further changes in our Winogradsky column, the following observations have been made:

On day 25 (15/4/16 - Pic. 1) the top layer of the liquid phase had a thicker crust of calcium carbonate. Also, a light purple color has been noticed in some parts of the liquid phase (Pic. 2) which indicates the appearance of anaerobic purple photosynthetic bacteria (e.g. Chromatiom).

                        Pic.1                                        Pic.2

After three days, on day 28 (18/4/16), the whole liquid phase gained a purple color, as well as the upper layer of the solid phase (Pic. 3). The purple bacteria’s quantity in the solid phase has been increased after 5 days, on day 33 (3/5/16) and the liquid phase had a lighter purple color (Pic. 4).

On day 39 (9/5/16) the color of the column became crimson, as well as half of the solid phase did (Pic. 5).

Today, on day 44 (14/5/16), the color of the solid phase is much darker than the rest of the column (Pic. 6).

We will inform you as soon as we see any new changes.
