Welcome to the Winogradsky column lab page! Students from the Departments of Biological Applications and Technology, University of Ioannina and Icthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Greece and the Microbiology course, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cádiz, Spain, discuss their findings on Winogradsky columns they constructed!

Bienvenidos a la pagina web de los Winobloggers! Aquí los estudiantes y profesores de dos departamentos griegos, el Departamento de Aplicaciones y Tecnologías Biológicas de la Universidad de Ioannina y el Departmento de Agricultura, Ictiología y Sistemas Acuáticos de la Universidad de Thessalia, junto con los estudiantes de Microbiología de la Facultad de Ciencias en la Universidad de Cádiz, se reúnen para observar, comentar, preguntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con nuestro experimento, la columna Winogradsky.

Univ. of Thessaly, Group number 04 (Ev. Gousia - Chr. Gkizas), Day 0-50, Incubation: Dark

We are undergraduate students in the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment, Agriculture Science, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. We are presenting our results from the Winogradsky column experiment that was conducted in Anauros beach (Volos) (21/03/2016). We colected results of  50 days .

When the sample collected at the first day, into the bottle there were one broken egg, pieces of paper and sediment (brown colour) and water (light yellow colour) of the area.

 
After 7 days of the experiment we 've noticed that the sediment became black and a white substance appear in the top of it. The water colour turned to ligth brown.

DAY 7




After 17 days the sediment was black and the water became white. The thick, white substance at the top of the sediment has disappeared.

After 30 days the water became dark gray and a gray substance appeared above the sediment.

After 36 days no changes at the column.

After 50 days the sediment became more compact and black, and the colour of the water became dark gray.
