UCA_6B_2: The evolution of our column.

After two weeks in the our Winograsky column, we can see, on the top of the column, there are bubbles. This is due to this microorganism are aerobic organism and they produces oxygen. In this part. There are a Brown layer because of there are a lot of oxygen and there isn’t sulphur. However, in the middle of the column, may be bacterium which use sulphur and produce organic matter from CO2 .

            WEEK 2                                                                                                                WEEK 3

On the other hand, the bottom of the colum is a black layer that consist of bacterium. They use  sulphur to produc organic matter instead of oxygem. So they are anaerobic organism.

WEEK 4

  1. Hi,
I think there is a bit of a confusion with some concepts.

    First, bacteria are everywhere!

Second, in the zones that are not black, probably there is still a lot of sulphate (concentration in seawater is around 25-30 mM). In contrast, where sediment is extremely black, it is likely that sulphate has been almost entirely consumed and has been converted to hydrogen sulfide.

Third. "They use sulphur to produce organic matter instead of oxygen."
If they produce organic matter they are autotrophic organisms, probably photosythetic. Whether they produce organic matter s not mutually exclusive with the release of oxygen. There are autotrophic microorganisms that release oxygen and others that release sulfate etc. But they all produce organic matter.

    Hope this is clearer now.
