UCA_5A_1: Day 14

Rio San Pedro sediment + 0.5g FeSO4 + filter paper

Hi there. We are a group of three people from the University of Cadiz in Spain and our we are going to prepare one Winogradsky column with plastic bottle. Our Winogradsky columns is composed of sediment from San Pedro river, cellulose (filter paper), water and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4)
First of all, we filled ¾ parts of the bottle with sediment. Then, we added cellulose (filter paper),  0,5 g of FeSO4 and water. Our conditions to analyze the development and generation of microorganisms are lighting.

Day 14

After two weeks…
The column shows a black sediment at the bottom. At the top of the bottle we can see small black spots due to the sulfur of iron (FeS). Also we can see orange lines, this is due to the oxides of iron sulfate

We will come back with some changes!

  1. Hi. Do you have more black spots at the top or the bottom? I also see a lot of green spots. What are these?
