Welcome to the Winogradsky column lab page! Students from the Departments of Biological Applications and Technology, University of Ioannina and Icthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Greece and the Microbiology course, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cádiz, Spain, discuss their findings on Winogradsky columns they constructed!

Bienvenidos a la pagina web de los Winobloggers! Aquí los estudiantes y profesores de dos departamentos griegos, el Departamento de Aplicaciones y Tecnologías Biológicas de la Universidad de Ioannina y el Departmento de Agricultura, Ictiología y Sistemas Acuáticos de la Universidad de Thessalia, junto con los estudiantes de Microbiología de la Facultad de Ciencias en la Universidad de Cádiz, se reúnen para observar, comentar, preguntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con nuestro experimento, la columna Winogradsky.

Río San Pedro sediment + 2g CaSO4 + filter paper

Hi, we are a group of students of Enology and we have made a Winogradsky's column for the subject of microbiology.

First we split in two group, three of us did this column under conditions with daylight and three in darkness.

Then we started to make a column with a bottle by:

- Little pieces of paper and sediments (we use beach's land). And we mix this.

- We add 2g of CaSO4 and mix again.

Next we fill the mix in the bottle but only the fourth part and fill in with sediments again until to complete almost all bottle. This time this sediment without paper and  without CaSO4.

For the end we add 1cm of beach's water and close the bottle but not complete, we did this for the microorganisms can to breath.

Both groups did this but, like said before, one bottle put in the window for the daylight and the other in darkness. This way we can observed how grow the microorganims in conditions luminous and conditions of darkness and study the contrast between them.

We believe that we have more growth in the bottle of conditions luminous that the bottle in darknes because the firts can do the photosynthesis and use sunlight like power source.

We hope to see many changes in our bottles and tell you.
