UCA_1C_ THIRD POST
Hello again!! Nine weeks ago, we prepared our
column and now we can see a lot of changes:
At the bottom of the column we can see a black colour
which indicate that there are anaerobic bacteria that reduce the CaSO4
we added.
In the middle of the column, we can see red and
green bacteria. They don´t need oxygen. They use the sulfide that comes from
CaSO4 reduced.
At the top of the column, there isn´t sulfide,
so the microorganisms that we can find there need another source of energy. In
this case, the source of energy is the sunlight.
When we talk about microorganisms, we suppose
that they are algae and photosynthetic bacteria. They are able to produce O2
which is going to be liberated to the atmosphere.
Finally, we
must say that with this experiment we have learnt how microorganisms occupy
specific microsites according to their environmental tolerances and their
carbon an energy requirements.

Which photosynthetic bacteria do you know that produce O2?
ReplyDeleteYou say that in the middle of the column you have red and green bacteria that consume H2S. Actually from the picture you have they do not look like purple and sulfur bacteria. It looks like a mixture of algae and purple non sulfur bacteria.
