Welcome to the Winogradsky column lab page! Students from the Departments of Biological Applications and Technology, University of Ioannina and Icthyology and Aquatic Environment, University of Thessaly, Greece and the Microbiology course, Faculty of Sciences, University of Cádiz, Spain, discuss their findings on Winogradsky columns they constructed!

Bienvenidos a la pagina web de los Winobloggers! Aquí los estudiantes y profesores de dos departamentos griegos, el Departamento de Aplicaciones y Tecnologías Biológicas de la Universidad de Ioannina y el Departmento de Agricultura, Ictiología y Sistemas Acuáticos de la Universidad de Thessalia, junto con los estudiantes de Microbiología de la Facultad de Ciencias en la Universidad de Cádiz, se reúnen para observar, comentar, preguntar y responder a preguntas relacionadas con nuestro experimento, la columna Winogradsky.

UCA_3B-7B_1: Day 1 - And so, the journey begins...

Rio San Pedro sediment + 0.20 g CaSO4 + filter paper

To make our column, we prepared a mixture of Rio San Pedro sediment, 0.20 grams of CaSO4 and pieces of filter paper. We put our mixture in two bottles until it reached two thirds of its height and then we added approximately one inch of water to each bottle.

Each bottle will be in slightly different conditions. Group 3B bottle will develop in a box, thus providing dark conditions for our microorganisms to grow in. On the other hand, group 7B will expose their bottle to sunlight. Then we will stablish a comparison between both bottles.
