UCA_4A-7A_2: Day 35 - There is life!

Rio San Pedro sediment + 30g NaCl + filter paper+ 1.51g CuSO4
When the column is in the light side, we can observe that little seaweeds have grown up on the surface, while on the bottom, purples bacterias have shown up. Also, the iron oxide has increased his amount, the column is redder. And we can see a little sea snail moving, which proves that it is alive.
When the column is in the dark side, we note that the column is warmer than on the light side. If you look closely, you can appreciate oxide on the surface. At the bottom, we can see more iron sulfide than last week because of the next reaction:
H2S + FeàFeS + H2
We can also see that there is something strange and black on the walls of the bottle, we do not really know what is it, but we think it could be some kind of oxide.

We have discovered that there is a dead worm that previously has done tunnels. Because the worm is dead, we suppose that this side is worse for life to be in.
We will come back the next week!

  1. Excellent columns! So, you added 30 g NaCl in the sediment? That's a lot of salt!!! How does this compare with "non-salted" columns?
    Gracias!
